Beyond Earth Hour Challenge 2008
Beyond
Earth Hour Challenge is a challenge involving 21 Sydney Region high
schools. The challenge for each school is to reduce their electricity
consumption over a period of a
month. The reduction in consumption will be calculated against the base
week (which is 1st September - 7th September). Energy Australia is
partnering with Observatory Hill to supply schools with electricity
consumption data through remote monitoring of the schools electricity
meter.
School teams in the project attended the Sydney Region Youth Environment Network conference to begin developing their School Energy Efficiency Plan, which includes devising a plan for a holiday shut down to minimise electricity wastage when the school is not fully operational. The strategies developed with school community support will foster a culture of sustainability through reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This campaign will allow a reduction in the expenditure on electricity and allow funding to be allocated for other purposes within the school. |

Across the Region over the 4 week period of the challenge involving 21 high schools, Sydney Region achieved an average reduction in greenhouse gas emmissions of 118,665 kgs of CO2, from a reduction in electricity consumption of 194,371 kWh. This resulted in savings on utilities of $10,278 across the region. Congratulations to Canterbury BHS who achieved the greatest average percentage reduction in their energy consumption over the 4 week challenge with 33.5%, which reduced their greenhouse gas emmissions by 5,768 kgs of CO2 and reduced expenditure on electricity by $487.30 |
