Taking Care of our place

PROGRAM AIMS:

To investigate the school environment and develop knowledge and understanding about the natural and built environment
To gain an understanding of how student's actions can help improve the environmental quality of their school
To create opportunities for students to demonstrate a caring attitude towards the environment
To investigate impacts of human activity on the natural environment.

The focus of this program is to develop a caring attitude towards the environment amongst students. The program emphasises ways that students can contribute to environmental quality at home and at school, by undertaking simple actions that reduce their impact on the environment.

Students will take part in three activities designed to encourage these actions:

(1) ‘Taking care of our place’ - students learn and perform a song, and design appropriate illustrations for a story book as a follow up activity, preferably using a computer based drawing program.
(2) ‘Stormwater Model’ - students watch a demonstration of a stormwater model to understand the process of stormwater pollution and how behaviour change can reduce impacts on local waterways close to the school.
(3) ‘Schoolyard environmental investigation’ - students will investigate the school grounds in order to identify positive and negative grounds management practices.

All the activities will take place in your school.

Stormwater model (20 mins)	Watch a demonstration of a stormwater m model to understand the process of stormwater pollution.	Understand the causes of stormwater pollution and how to care for stormwater
Schoolyard Investigation (10 mins)	Students will investigate the school buildings and grounds, in order to identify the positive and negaitve ground and resource management processes	Understand sustainable environmental management practices at home and at school
