Big Build Up

- Designing and making in the built environment for Stage 3

CURRICULUM CONTEXT
This full day fieldwork program has been designed to support the Science and Technology K-6 syllabus, (especially the content strands of Built Environment, Products and Services, Information and Communications) and contribute to the learning processes of investigating, designing and making and using technology.  Aspects of the HSIE K-6 Syllabus and the Environmental Education Policy also contribute strongly to the outcomes.
The different activities emphasise the role of technology int he design  of built environments. The program will highlight practises which illustrate a contribution towards ecological sustainability. This program also support the following COGS units - Living Land - DMS3.8, BES3.1, UTS3.9

THE STUDY AREA
'Big Build Up' caters for Years 5-6 and focuses on designing floor plans and eventually a model of an environmentally sustainable work environment within a commercial office building in the CBD. The fieldwork will focus on learning about the various functions of work spaces in a modern office tower and the role of design and technology in shaping built environments.
Environmentally sustainable design features and practices will be a key focus area. Students will also be introduced to computer-assisted design.

Students will be able to:

FIELDWORK IN ACTION

1.Observatory Hill EEC

Introduction to the design task- Built Environments

Recap on pre-visit activities

Evaluate built environments with consideration of safety, aesthetics, culture, functionality and sustainability issues.

2. Building visit

Building visit - investigating

Students will view the various design elements in a commercial office building and classify them into aesthetic, cultural, safety, functional and sustainability categories

Conduct their own investigations and makes judgments based on the results of observing, questioning, planning, predicting, testing, collecting, recording, and analysing data and drawing conclusions

3. Observatory Hill EEC

Designing your floor plan - Designing and making

Students will design floor plans of a commercial office building on grid paper in preparation for building a model of their building
Develop and resolve a design task by planing, implementing, managing and evaluating design processes

4. Observatory Hill EEC

Computer assisted design - using technology

Students will use a CAD program - 'Google Sketchup' to become familiar with the software in preparation for them to design a computer generated model of their building and to design a sustainable house
Evaluate, select and uses a range of equipment, computer based technology, materials and other resources to meet the requirements and constraints of investigation and design tasks. Apply their knowledge of design principles to a computer generated model
