Rocks Ramble

Years 5-6

This fieldwork program has been designed to support the HSIE K-6 Syllabus and the Environmental Education Curriculum Statement K-12, and is a full day program. The different activities emphasise the built and social environment using sensory awareness and problem solving strategies. 'Rocks Ramble' caters for Years 4 - 6 and uses a study of the historic Rocks area as a focus. The Rocks is a significant heritage location. The First Fleet arrived and from this grew the first urban village. It was not long before the face of the settlement changed and The Rocks became part of a global economy. It became the heart of trade, shipping and commerce. This program offers students a unique look at The Rocks from the past to the present with emphasis on the colonial era. Comparisons will be made between present and past uses of buildings. Issues such as past threats to the area will be raised and students will gain a greater understanding of the importance of conservation especially within the built environment.

The program will provide opportunities for students to:

* describe the events and actions related to British occupation and assess changes and consequences.

* explain the significance of particular places, actions and events in the past to develop Australia's identity and heritage.

* explain and evaluate the significance of The Rocks as a heritage site.

* understand the interactions of people with their environment and the necessity of caring for and conserving a feature or site.
