Spaces 4 Places

'Spaces 4 Places' caters for Year 7-8 and focusses on the Built Environment in the northern precinct of the CBD of Sydney. This location has experienced a recent revitalisation, with urban renewal being the vehicle to accommodate the recent trend in an increased desire of city living. Many commercial office buildings have been converted to exclusive high rise apartment blocks, and the old Walsh Bay wharves, shore sheds and bond stores have been adaptivly re-used for residential, commercial and cultural uses. With this frenzy of re-development the focus on the importance of heritage conservation and sustainable design are the foundations of this program. The outdoor design section, is focussed on re-designing outdoor green spaces from a design brief. Alternatively, there are also opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, understanding and skills to interior design.

The Program Pack contains location maps, a CD of pre-visit activities, and other resource material to support your preparation for the fieldwork. The student outcomes provide a link to complement classroom learning and also supports objectives of the DET Environmental Education Policy.

FIELDWORK AIMS:

  • To focus on the Built Environment Area of Study and provide opportunities for students to interact first hand with the factors influencing the design of outdoor spaces.
  • To introduce students to the roles of designers and their contribution to the improvement of the quality of life, in particular the contribution of ecologically sustainable design.
  • To enable students to gain confidence in identifying and explaining ethical, social, environmental and sustainability considerations in a design project.
  • To give students experiences in the skills of investigating environments by observing, analysing and interacting with elements of the built environment.
  • To foster care for the environment by equipping students to make reasoned, responsible and informed decisions as global environmental citizens.
