Tourism - An Economic Activity

This program focusses on the Stage 6 Geography topic 'People and Economic Activity'. The day is divided into two parts. The morning session takes place at the Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre and includes a comprehensive overview of the world tourism industry including an explanation of the factors which explain the location, spatial patterns and future directions of the industry. The Afternoon is devoted to a study of a CBD hotel as an example of an economic enterprise within the tourism industry. This study emphasises

A The nature of the enterprise

B Its locational factors and ecological dimensions

C Internal and external linkages and flows of people, goods services and ideas within the hotel

D The impact of global changes on the hotels operations

The opportunity also exists for students to conducts surveys of tourists within the rocks area to consolidate their understanding of fieldwork methodologies.

1. Observatory Hill EEC

Introduction to program. Presentation by OHEEC teachers on the global context of tourism. View video and study promotional/marketing materials. Undertake a group work activity related to marketing strategies.

 

Understand the nature of the global tourism industry.

Identify factors explaining the nature, spatial patterns and future directions of the industry. Identify the social economic and environmental impacts of tourism.

Complete a groupwork activity identifying external linkages influencing a hotels operations, and the impact this has on the internal linkages.

2. Economic enterprise Study - CBD Hotel

TBA upon booking fieldwork

Undertake a comprehensive study of the hotel including the nature of the hotel, factors affecting its operations, internal and external linkages at a variety of scales and the impacts of outside agencies.

 

Describe interactions between the factors effecting its operations.

identify issues that arise from these interactions. Understand the relevance of geographic understanding to particular vocations

 

3. Study within a Tourist destination - The Rocks

Conduct a study of tourist- orientated retailing Interview tourists and people employed in the tourist industry.

 

Identify links between production and consumption within the tourism industry.

Describe how social, cultural, economic and political factors influence the industry.

Identify issues related to tourism. Enhance skill development in active inquiry methodologies.

 

4. CBD Model, Customs House

Use maps and the CBD model to identify the local linkages between the hotel and its local area.

Consolidate mapping and model interpretation skills. Categorise the variety of linkages of people,goods, services and ideas between the hotel and its local area.
